Types of Ostomy Pouches PDF
All three types of pouches are available in both one-piece and two-piece systems.

A drainable pouch lets you empty the pouch through an opening at the bottom of the pouch. It is closed by using a tail closure (sometimes called a tail clip) or by a ''clipless'' tail closure built right into the bottom of the pouch. There are usually used for fecal stomas (ileostomy, colostomy).

A closed-end pouch has no opening at the bottom and must be removed and thrown away when it is full. Closed-end pouches are handy to use when you are travelling or if you don't want to empty a drainable pouch. They are usually used for fecal stomas (ileostomy, colostomy).

A urostomy pouch is specially made so you can easily empty urine. It has a valve or tap at the bottom that can be opened and shut. Most urostomy pouches have an anti-reflux valve that keeps urine away from the stoma.

People with urinary stoma may choose to use a night drainable system so they don't have to get up during the night to empty their pouch. This system includes flexible tubing attaches to the tap on the bottom of the pouch. The other end of the tubing attaches to a plastic container or bag that can be placed on the floor next to your bed. Gravity will help keep the urine flowing from the pouch to the night drainage collector. Be careful to not let the tubing twist and block the flow of urine to the collection device.
