Ostomy pouching systems are made to prevent leakage, to manage stool or urine, gas and odor, and to protect the skin around your stoma. They can also help you feel secure and confident as you go about your daily activities. Today's ostomy pounching systems are lightweight and discreet so they don't show under your clothes.

They come in two styles: one-piece and two-piece. Regardless of whether it is a one- or two-piece system, each ostomy pounching system consists of two major parts: a special adhesive called a skin barrier and a pouch.

One-piece
The pouch and the skin barrier are made as a single unit. Because they are made together, you can't remove the pouch without removing the skin barrier.

Two-piece
The pouch and the skin barrier are two separate pieces that fit together with some sort of coupling device called a flange or by adhesive coupling. The pouch can be taken off the skin barrier without taking the skin barrier off your abdomen.
